Choosing the Right Roller Shades Fabric
What kind of fabric you use on your windows will affect the amount of light that reaches the interior, the amount of privacy that you have, and how the windows look from the outside. Broadly speaking, all fabrics can be categorized into four types:
Cordless Lift
Cordless roller shades roll and unwind, with just a gentle push or pull on the bottom rail, no cords, no chains, no loops. It’s the cleanest and safest for children in the home! WCMA Best for Kids cordless systems are available throughout our collections.
Continuous Chain Loop
If the shade is larger and heavier, then a chain loop lift will give you precise, smooth control. The chain is attached and won’t separate and is reliable for everyday use on wide or tall windows. For a more elegant style, there’s also a beaded chain in stainless steel.
Motorized Lift
Hands-free operation is possible with motorized roller shades through remote controls, wall switches or a smartphone app. Install timers to control when your shades go up and down, such as when the sun rises or falls during the day. Motorized options are compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit for seamless integration with a smart home.

Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount: Which Is Right for Your Windows?
Inside Mount brings the shade bracket in the window frame giving a clean, built in appearance with the window trim completely visible. The inside mount has a minimum window depth of 3/4”, and is best for windows with beautiful trim that needs to be displayed.
Outside Mount places the bracket over the top of the window frame, so that the shade extends over the frame and the rest of the window area. Outside mount is recommended on windows with shallow depth, for the light blockage, and to make windows look taller or wider than they are.
Still don’t know which mount type to get for your windows? We test each window, and record the depth and trim clearance and advise on the window mount in each room.
Room-by-Room Roller Shade Recommendations

Bedroom
Charcoal, white or linen blackout roller shades to cover when mounted outside the frame. Integrate a lift based on cable or motor to provide gentle lifting with silent operation without awakening sleepers.

Living Room
Filtering or sheer roller shades decrease the glare on TVs while letting light in to brighten up a room. For rooms that receive high levels of afternoon sun, a 3% to 5% solar screen fabric is suitable.

Home Office
Blackout or 1-3% Solar screen cloth blocks out the blinding light of the monitor without need of artificial lighting. Another valuable application of a motorized blind is in your home office where your hands are otherwise filled.

Nursery and Children's Rooms
For safety and sleep you should use cordless blackout roller shades over curtains. Fabrics with GREENGUARD certification emit the least chemicals in the places children spend the most time.

Kitchen and Bathrooms
For humid environments, lightweight polyester moisture-resistant fabrics are the practical solution, as they are either light filtering or solar screen. Easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Sliding Glass Doors
Motorized roller shades with wide widths operate comfortably in wide openings. Dual roller shades (light to black) allows for you to get a complete window control from daylight to night's darkness in one headrail.
Upgrade to Dual Roller Shades
Dual roller shades are two different shades on a single headrail – one light to let in more sunlight and one blackout shade for privacy at night. This saves you the hassle of multi-layered window treatments and provides the ultimate in light control at any time without window hardware changes. One of our most requested upgrades for living rooms, primary bedrooms and media rooms is the all too popular dual roller shades, both manual and motorized. Why Maryland, Virginia, and DC Homeowners Choose BuyHomeBlinds

Frequently Asked Questions About Roller Shades
What is the difference between light filtering and blackout roller shades?
Light filtering shades can reduce the amount of natural light in your room, yet still allow for brightness, while creating privacy during the day. Blackout roller shades feature specially selected dense opaque fabrics to block almost all light and are ideal for use in bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms where complete darkness is essential. There are two different kinds of fabrics and they also have different functions, they are found in different rooms, even in the same house.
Are cordless roller shades safe for homes with children?
Yes. Cordless roller shades completely remove string loops and drooping cords that can pose a strangulation risk to toddlers and children. All of our cordless lift systems are WCMA Best for Kids certified. Another kid-friendly feature of motorised roller blinds is that they have no visible cords, and can be operated with a remote or app.
Can roller shades be motorized?
Yes. At BuyHomeBlinds, we offer all our collections in the motorized roller shade option. They can be switched remotely, via wall switch or be linked to smart home systems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit. Battery-powered motors are easy to install in any room and do not need to be wired into any power source. Set shades to open and shut during the day.
What is the difference between inside mount and outside mount roller shades?
Inside mount installs the shade bracket inside the window frame, preserving the look of the window trim. The outside mount installs the bracket over the window frame (all the way around) and over any light gaps around the window frame. For the greatest light blockage, and for shallow-depth windows, which may not fit the inside mount bracket, an outside mount is recommended.
How do I choose between a chain loop and a cordless roller shade?
Cordless shades are ideal for most homes, especially for homes with children or other smaller windows and for homes where a clean, cord-free aesthetic is desired. Chain loop lifts work best for large, heavy or wide shades because the mechanical advantage of a continuous loop allows for more consistent and accurate control, compared to a spring system operated by a cordless.
What fabrics are available for roller shades at BuyHomeBlinds?
We also have a variety of light filtering designer fabrics, sheer and natural woven fabrics, blackout fabrics that block all light and solar screen fabrics to block out the UV and glare. There are multiple collections that are GREENGUARD-certified and flame resistant. Get free fabric swatches to view colors and textures in your home before ordering custom fabrics.
